Crocheted Coral Reef & The Scientific Explanation by Gianna D.

Gianna D.'s senior project focused on the creation of a Crochet Coral Reef exhibit, blending visual arts and marine sciences to raise awareness about the plight of coral reefs. She expressed, "I crocheted something that would be able to grasp people's attention to direct them towards the effects reefs are going through now and the importance they have in our world." Drawing inspiration from her childhood and projects like the Satellite Reef Coral Coral Reef, Gianna incorporated scientific research, personal footage, and a diverse collection of materials to create a multi-sensory experience.

The project involved meticulous crocheting using various yarns, hooks, and techniques to emulate coral structures. Gianna combined this with recycled materials for conservation purposes and integrated LED lighting for a realistic effect. "I created something that was 50% visual arts and 50% marine sciences, they're equally important to me," Gianna emphasized, highlighting the interdisciplinary nature of her endeavor.

"I crocheted as much as I could every day to ensure enough production to meet the deadline," she remarked. Despite the hurdles, Gianna showcased resilience and creativity, with aspirations to exhibit globally and utilize the project for educational and entrepreneurial endeavors.
